AM-HEAL Project: Transforming Lives with Innovation

A Micro-Credential in Additive Manufacturing for Personalized Rehabilitation and War Injury Recovery

Bridging the gap between Additive Manufacturing (AM) and healthcare education.

Project Overview

The Role of Additive Manufacturing in Healthcare

AM-HEAL is an Erasmus+ funded project focused on bridging the gap between Additive Manufacturing (AM) and healthcare education. Specifically, the project aims to equip professionals with the digital and technical skills needed to design and produce personalised rehabilitation solutions. In particular, it focuses on prosthetics and assistive devices.

Responding to Crisis and War Recovery

Furthermore, the initiative responds to a growing need for innovation in healthcare systems. By doing so, it specifically addresses the urgent needs of contexts affected by war and crisis by directly supporting Ukraine’s recovery efforts. Consequently, by combining advanced manufacturing technologies with education and training, AM-HEAL contributes to more inclusive, resilient, and future-ready healthcare systems across Europe.

Why is this project necessary?

Current Challenges in Europe and Ukraine

Currently, healthcare systems across Europe, and especially in Ukraine, face increasing challenges. For instance, the ongoing war in Ukraine has led to a significant rise in amputations. In fact, this situation compounds a severe shortage of prosthetics specialists and healthcare personnel in frontline areas. Therefore, this critical situation creates an urgent need to address several fronts:

  • First, the rising demand for personalised rehabilitation and war injury recovery solutions.
  • Second, the critical shortage of trained professionals in prosthetics and advanced manufacturing.
  • Additionally, the limited integration of digital technologies in healthcare education.
  • Finally, the need for scalable, sustainable, and cost-effective solutions.

The Transformative Power of 3D Printing

Given this context, Additive Manufacturing offers a transformative response, enabling faster, more affordable, and tailored medical solutions. However, the lack of structured training remains a key barrier. As a result, AM-HEAL addresses this gap by integrating AM into higher education and professional training. Thus, it empowers professionals to transform the lives of war-affected individuals.

Project Objectives

The main objective of AM-HEAL is to develop a Micro-Credential in Additive Manufacturing for healthcare applications, enhancing digital skills and employability in the sector. To achieve this goal, specific objectives include:

  1. Develop an accredited micro-credential programme in AM for healthcare.
  2. Create an interactive e-learning platform with multilingual training content.
  3. Provide hands-on training opportunities through practical learning environments.
  4. Strengthen EU–Ukraine cooperation to rebuild educational infrastructure and support post-conflict rehabilitation.
  5. Promote sustainable and inclusive healthcare solutions using AM technologies.

Key Project Actions

Meanwhile, the AM-HEAL project will implement a structured and impactful work plan. In this regard, the main phases are:

  • Curriculum Design: Development of a specialised training programme aligned with EU standards.
  • E-learning Development: Creation of digital modules combining theory, simulations, and practical applications.
  • Pilot Testing: Training of at least 80 participants to validate the programme.
  • 3D Printing Hub (Ukraine): Prototype laboratory at Kyiv Borys Grinchenko Metropolitan University to provide practical training in patient-specific prosthetics.
  • Certification & Accreditation: Ensuring recognition of the micro-credential within the European Higher Education Area.
  • Dissemination & Exploitation: Sharing results through events, platforms, and networks across Europe.
